COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Community Programs
Looking At Art A field trip to the South Shore Art Center offers an opportunity to visit an art museum, see and discuss a contemporary art exhibition and make a hands-on project to take home. This two-hour program costs $12.00 per student and can be scheduled throughout the year for school groups, summer camps, scout troops and special needs students.
Arts To Go Art Center experts visit schools or community groups to provide an arts enhancement to whatever subject is being studied in the classroom. Students have recently benefitted from learning about and participating in African block printing with adinkra symbols; making Mexican animalitas; learning the basic strokes of Chinese Brush Painting and the cultural principles they represent; creating unique Greek vases using the iconography and stylistic devices of their studies of Ancient Greece.

We love challenges, so name your topic and we’ll respond with a special arts enhancement to your subject of study.
Cost: $120 per hour per class.
Artist In Residence
For the past eleven years, the Art Center has offered a cost-free Artist in Residence program for upper elementary students in schools on the South Shore. To date, approximately 12,000 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have had the opportunity to meet with artists in all media, as well as make a hands-on piece of art that relates to the medium being discussed, to take home.

This year we are delighted to welcome Karen McEachern Cass, an artist and teacher living on the South Shore, as this year’s Artist in Residence. Karen’s unique paintings, often using charcoal, collage and mixed media, as well as oil and acrylic paint, offer glimpses of plants, pieces of furniture, interiors and other-worldly landscapes. Her paintings invite viewers to enter and become an active participant in finishing the story. Students will learn about Karen’s life as an artist, her creative inspirations, her work in various media and will have a chance to participate in helping her create a piece of art. Her presentation promises to be lively, entertaining and engaging for students and adults alike.

If you are interested in the program for this upcoming school year (2014-15), please contact Allison Crowe, 781-383-2787, x.15 or email acrowe@ssac.org. Maximum number of students/ visit is 60. Program offered for two hours on Wednesday mornings.
PDPs All of our courses and workshops are available for professional development. Certificates of attendance will be provided corresponding to the number of hours of the workshop or course. Teachers may bundle these hours with those of other organizations and submit them to their schools for PDPs. We also offer full or half day in-service art workshops for groups of teachers (usually 6–12) in a variety of media.
Bring Your Group Every Monday evening we host an art enrichment class for members of a recreation program offered by the Arc of the South Shore. We are eager to accommodate other special needs groups and will work with you to arrange an art experience for your group. We also welcome Boy and Girl Scout troops to the SSAC to earn their art badges.
