Juror's Comments
I want to thank Patrice Maye and the South Shore Art Center for this opportunity to look at photographs – one of my favorite things to do.
The jurying process is always exciting – each image a new discovery. 110 artists submitted 384 images for consideration, of these I selected these 49 images from 39 artists for the exhibit. The jury process was a “blind jury” so I didn’t know the identity of any of the photographers until after the process had ended and was submitted.
I’d like to thank all the artists who shared their views: landscapes and portraits; multiple exposures, the use of special film and filters –stopping time for that instant to show us a moment lost except through their camera – a permanent memory.
All art is a mirror to one’s self, so my response comes from my thoughts and personal history, and my years of looking, which have influenced how I see. I look at black and white prints differently than those in color. I spend more time navigating the black and white image because without color to immediately reveal what is there, I slow down and search texture, details, light, and shadow.
Because I respond emotionally to visuals… each image selected generated a feeling – I felt joy, wonder, amazement, solitude, grace, and sometimes sadness. Your photographs heightened my awareness. You made me want to travel. I wanted to be able to slow down raindrops to see their lens effect. I realized how much happens on the street that I might just walk past without connecting. I could stand for hours at night and my eyes still wouldn’t let me see what long exposures capture. Thank you for expanding my vision.
I hope you enjoy the exhibit as much as I did in selecting the images. Thank you.
