Juror Comments:
Thank you again for the opportunity to jury the "Journeys" show at SSAC. It was an honor and a pleasure to participate in the process.
1st Prize – Kim Alemian - My top choice for the prizes is "Niger Delta". The composition is perfectly balanced and beautifully constructed. This scene literally could be taking place in every corner of the earth. The boat looks traditional and hand-built. The industrial structures and large container ship in the background are clearly not. The driver of the boat looks young and perhaps female, while the male figures up front cast nets. The juxtaposition addresses a multitude of issues facing humanity as we struggle to marry the progress of technology with ancient customs. I appreciate the rich narrative that the piece offers. Viewers are left to wonder what the lives of these figures in the boat are like, where they are, and what their futures hold for them.
2nd Prize – Marion Carlson - The gaze of the mannequin with pink hair followed me around the room as I made selections. Her presence was penetrating, her hair an oddity. It was not until I walked over to the piece and picked it up that I realized the figure in the photo was a mannequin and not an actual person. This unexpected surprise was both unsettling and captivating. The artist has produced a modern day Mona Lisa…a strong female figure that both perplexes and entrances.
3rd Prize – Pat Isaac - The little green dory is quiet and restful. Yet, I am struck by its strong presence. It sits alone facing the viewer straight on waiting, inviting, open to admiration. The artist has achieved a masterful result with a challenging medium. Her multilayered pastel rendering is rich and luminous. The water surrounding the boat is alive...reflective and changing, yet peaceful. I returned to admire it many times.
4th Prize – Lisa Goren - The abstract iceberg is both mysterious and alluring. Although it is depicted very loosely with lots of open spaces visually, viewers are made keenly aware of the structure's magnitude. The deep blue-green foreground conjures thoughts of a fathomless space. And yet we are aware that climate change is slowly voiding the planet of these glacial bodies. The icy white-pink sky speaks to this vulnerability. It is a poetic and beautiful piece that truly drew me in.
